In early November, SBC held the Climate Transformation Alliance’s (CTA) first community event at the Community Arts Center in Downtown Truckee. CTA was developed in 2021 as a collaborative effort between the Town of Truckee, the Truckee Donner Public Utility District, and the Truckee Tahoe Airport District. It was created with a shared vision to reduce emissions in the Truckee Tahoe region and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045. CTA brought together local public agencies, businesses, organizations, and individuals all with the understanding that tackling climate change is more effective when working together.

The public event was a celebration of progress and a showcase of CTA’s ongoing commitment to climate action.

CTA member Mountain Lotus Provisions provided food and mocktails at the event, providing a beautiful, hearty vegetarian – and climate-friendly spread for event attendees!

One of the main projects CTA members worked on this year was the Inaugural Accelerator. Similar to SBC’s pitch camp for small businesses, the Accelerator allowed CTA members to split into groups, based on their interest or expertise, that focused on a specific emissions-producing sector of our community.

Throughout the quarterly meetings in 2023, each group refined their ideas with coaches and picked their best idea to present. These innovative local climate solutions were pitched at the October quarterly meeting with ideas ranging from networked geothermal and a local carbon offset market to a carbon accounting proposal for natural and working lands.

With $30,000 in prize funds generously provided by the Truckee Tahoe Airport District, winners were chosen by the judging panel based on impact on overall emissions and overall engagement in the presentation. The judging panel was made up of staff from the City of South Lake Tahoe, Town of Truckee, Northstar, Electrify Tahoe, and Raley’s. Accelerator winners were announced and awarded their checks at the community event.

Meet the winners of our Inaugural CTA Accelerator!

1st Prize: $20,000

“Wood is Good” from the Energy & Power Generation Team

This project will support the work of Northstar Community Services District in their pursuit of a wood energy system that will remove hazardous biomass from the forest and provide district heating to their facilities.

2nd Prize: $10,000

“Food Waste Diversion in Truckee-Tahoe” from the Waste Diversion Divas: This project will provide public education and outreach on the importance and benefits of composting and will also provide opportunities for at-home composting in the community.

As we look forward to the implementation of these two amazing projects, here at SBC we’re reflecting on the importance of collaboration in catalyzing change. We encourage everyone in the community to get involved to support the shared vision of the CTA in creating a more resilient region.

Stay tuned for more updates on upcoming CTA projects and events!
