Discovering the Lost Sierra
Recently I discovered a new favorite getaway in our Sierra Nevada, and it is one that is already calling me back for more. They call it the “Lost Sierra” and you can find it within the Sierra Buttes and Lakes Basin Recreation Area just outside of Graeagle, CA.
I was drawn to this little known area by way of a race titled the Lost Sierra Endurance Run, which I have to say is a pretty fast moving way to enjoy these surroundings. The race covers approximately 32 miles of valleys and lakes, ponds and peaks, as well as plenty of glorious alpine vistas. The race course led me to circumnavigate the waters of Lost Lake, some of the clearest I have seen in the entire Sierra Nevada. The run followed a meticulously maintained trail network that makes for easy access to many of these remote places. This year’s race was only the second running of this event and I am confident that the experience of running such a beautiful, dynamic course will draw an increasing number of athletes here for years to come.
The race was put on by the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship organization. This organization, formed in 2003, and its volunteers are responsible for the management and maintenance of this wonderful trail system in the Lost Sierra, as well as many others found in Sierra and Plumas counties. They also put on the famous Downieville Classic mountain bike race every summer.
If you have never before visited the magical Lakes Basin, or if it has been a while since you last viewed the reflection of the Sierra Buttes in Sardine Lake at sunrise, then I highly recommend that you make the trip and discover all of the glory that the Lost Sierra has to offer.
