In Memoriam: Janice Forbes

We regret to inform you that Janice Forbes passed away on June 4th, 2013.

Janice was more than SBC’s founder, she was a guiding light in our region.  janiceforbescrop

As the founder and publisher of Sierra Heritage magazine and The Placer Sentinel Janice helped define our region; people now say, “I am from the Sierra Nevada.”  As the founding chairman of the  board of the Placer Community Foundation Janice worked tirelessly to improve her community.  As a founder of the Auburn Symphony and the Auburn-Placer Performing Arts Center she brought joy to thousands.  As the founder of the Auburn Community Bank Janice helped people realize their dreams.  As a woman Janice excelled at a time when women finally earned their rights in our society. As an active member of organizations like the Sierra Club, Republicans for Environmental Responsibility and the California League of Conservation Voters Janice helped hold us all responsible for the world we will leave behind.

To SBC Janice was our founding board chair; served on our board for almost all of our 20 years; was a leader in the Placer Legacy effort; was the person who came up with the idea of Investing for Prosperity; and provided some of the best advice and counsel we have ever received.

She was always incredibly young at heart, embracing new ideas, technologies and media seamlessly.  She once told me that the most fun she every had in her life was sitting in a smokey subterranean bar in Oakland “with a beat crowd” listening to Dave Brubeck play Take Five.  She introduced me to Gary Snyder and asked me, “Where will you dig in, Mr. Frisch”?

As more information regarding remembrances and memorial services are available we will make them available as quickly as possible.

Regretfully,

Steve Frisch
